L'ENVOI
Cowper wrote: "The oars alone can never prevail to reach the far shore; the breath of Heaven must inflate the sail Or the toil is lost." I praise and glorify the name of Allah, in which his humble servant has enabled him to complete in manuscript the Exegetical work on which he has been working systematically and incessantly for the last three years. My manuscript was completed in Lahore on the fourth of April 1937, my sixty-fifth birthday according to the solar calendar. My inner history during these three years was a joyful and intense exploration, undisturbed by the storms that disturbed my outer life. I had not imagined that so much human jealousy, misunderstanding, and painful misrepresentation should have followed one who sought no worldly gain and pretended to no dogmatic authority. But the numerous grateful letters from distant readers have greatly consoled me. I thank them and wish them to feel that they and I are friends riding a horse (Zamil in Arabic), whose scope is unlimited compared to Ali's ordinary knowledge and who is doing research in a lofty field. Such a relationship is closer in spirit than blood ties, country ties or any other joint venture.
The printer and publisher now hope to issue all the completed volumes within two months. I have added a short Index, but it is more complete than what is found in most Koranic Translations. As I intended in my preface, the preparation of a complete analytical Index covering the text, notes and comments will take time and will be published as a separate volume in the future if there is a request.
That's why I'm taking leave of you, Gene Reader, and praying for your spiritual progress, just as I asked you to pray for me.
